Safeguarding

Safeguarding at 糖心Vlog

As part of providing a safe environment in which to work and study, and protecting the public, the University has a  and a .  'Safeguarding' is defined in the Safeguarding Policy as concerns that may arise about:

  • Children (individuals who are under 18 years old);
  • Adults at risk, also known as vulnerable adults (as defined in the Care Act 2014, any person aged 18 years or older who has care and support needs, is experiencing, or is at risk of, abuse or neglect; and because of their care and support needs, is unable to protect themselves against abuse or neglect or the risk of it);
  • County lines (a violent and exploitative form of drug distribution);
  • Modern slavery (where people are exploited for criminal gain, including slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour and human trafficking); and
  • Radicalisation (the process by which an individual becomes vulnerable to terrorism and the extremist ideologies associated with terrorist groups).

Concerns can relate to students, staff or members of the public, and may relate to an individual's behaviour or how they are being affected by the behaviour of others.

Safeguarding concerns should be reported immediately to the University's Lead Safeguarding Officers (the Executive Director of Student and Academic Services and the University Secretary) via the University's accident and incident reporting system (Evotix) (NB please select the safeguarding form), or by contacting either or both of the Lead Safeguarding Officers directly. If the situation is not urgent and you wish to discuss a referral before reporting the concern, you may contact your Local Safeguarding Officer or either of the Lead Safeguarding Officers.

How we respond to a concern will depend on the context and situation, and could include referral to another University policy or support service, or (rarely) referral to an outside agency. The  is about ensuring that the right expertise is brought to bear in responding to a concern.

Concerns relating to , ,  and  are not defined as safeguarding concerns, and can be reported via the University’s  portal. Concerns about an individual’s wellbeing (e.g. their mental or physical health) are not safeguarding concerns unless they fall within the definition of safeguarding above, and can be reported through the accident and incident reporting system (Evotix) (NB please select the wellbeing form).

We encourage all staff to complete the following online courses (which must be completed by all Safeguarding Officers):

  • (covering child protection)
  • (covering Prevent and radicalisation)

For any questions concerning safeguarding, please contact the University Secretary.
